I visit Fatima at her parents flat in Tashkent. Like many Uzbekistan apartments, the rooms are cozy, the conversation flows, and the sweets and libations are eagerly handed out to visitors. Before me stands 19-year-old Fatima Ausheva, leggy, graceful and beautiful in a fawnlike way, she is one of the top web models or fashion models in Uzbekistan.
As I speak with her, my attention is captivated at times by her juicy orange-polished nails, almost as bright and buoyant as her never-say-die personality. Smiling and laughing, her eyes twinkling with pleasure, she possesses a maturity far greater than her years. Her hospitality makes one feel at home rather quickly and we find ourselves talking about modeling and fashion for hours.
As a teen internet model in great demand, Fatima has posed for a dizzying amount of Japanese, Chinese, Turkish, Indian and Thai magazines. She’s catwalked to her heart’s delight among numerous fashion shows in Asia including Dior, Chanel, Jean Paul Gauthier, and YSL, and she’s landed a string of ad campaigns.
Fatima has enjoyed her fame. She’s visited Istanbul, Seoul, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Tokyo, and Moscow. She’s partied endless nights with Paris Hilton, the Black Eyed Peas, and Kate Moss in Hong Kong and Thailand. She jokingly taught Pearl Harbor star Josh Hartnett how to say the Russian word for boobs, ‘Siski.’
She dreams to grace the cover of i-D Magazine, and she wants to return to modeling after she recovers from cancer.
